10 Famous Apples You Have To Eat

In this post I’ll go through the 10 famous apples you have to eat. This list is from my expert opinion on all things apples and hope you give some of the exotic ones a try! The first 5 famous apples are the more popular apples you can find at a grocery store depending where you live. But the next 5 famous apples are more rare and may take some traveling or keeping an eye out to taste.

Here is the list!

1. Gala

First famous apple on the list is the Gala or Royal Gala apple which is an absolute must to eat, this apple is the all star of apples.

When it comes to eating apples we want the sweet flavor , sharp crisp, enough juiciness but not too much. Some tartness, and an overall enjoyable experience. The gala is famous for covering all these aspects consistently.

Gala apples also has an above average store life compared to other popular brands. All in all, definitely try a gala apple if you have not yet. It is a standard for apple eating.

2. McIntosh

The McIntosh is another famous apple that has a great bite, good sweetness, fine tartness, and good juiciness. In fact, this apple was a favorite of the developer Jef Raskin who was responsible for the naming of the Mac laptop. Raskin named the project MacIntosh and the spelling had to be change to “MacIntosh” since users were misspelling to McIntosh.

3. Golden Delicious

Next on the list of famous apples to eat is the Golden Delicious apple. Golden delicious is a must for anyone that enjoys eating apples. The flavor is similar to the gala, but has slightly more tartness and juiciness. The extra tartness can be delicious as it adds to the profile of the bite. This apple was a favorite of mine in college because it wasn’t too sweet and the local store always had these on sale.

4. Honeycrisp

Honeycrisp apple is famous to eat because it was the most popular apple in terms of total sales in 2020. If consumers are loving this apple, then you have to try it. The flavor profile, high crisp, high sweetness, medium tartness and low juiciness. Overall the bite is a very enjoyable experience, and the naming convention matches the bite giving it a psychological boost.

If you see the name honey crisp you think honey = sweet, and crisp is a major part of the bite. The name sets a positive expectation and that expectation is met.

5. Fuji

From Fujisaki Japan, the Fuji is famous to eat for its medium sweetness, high juiciness, low tart, and medium crisp. A unique aspect of the Fuji apple is that it has high sugar content , but the initial bite feels low in sugar. That is, the sugar comes in at the back of the bite. Thus I labelled medium sweetness because of the overall bite and experience.

6. Lemonade

This next apple you have to eat! The Lemonade apple tastes just like lemonade, it’s actually incredible! The crisp and tartness  level is on the high end, but when the flavor tastes so similar to lemonade this can be completely forgotten in the eating experience.

If you see this apple at your local grocery store or farmers market , just buy it! Close your eyes and take a bite and enjoy the experience.

7. Lucy Glo

With the name Lucy Glo, I think of a person instead of an apple. But this is an amazing apple to eat! I recently went to Sedona for a weekend trip and I brought along a bag of Lucy Glo apples. When sharing some apples with my brothers they were surprised at how tasty this apple was.

Its almost candy like taste is on another level! Think about a fruit as sweet as candy, with high crisp, tartness, and medium juiciness. It’s a true delight to enjoy a Lucy Glo especially on a summer day.

8. Sekai Ichi

The elusive Sekai Ichi apple , reportedly the largest apple in the world with some apple weighing up to 2 pounds! In addition, the name Sekai Ichi means “world’s number one,” so it’s clear this apple was meant to be the largest apple in the world.

Getting your hands on this apple is actually quite hard. Sekai Ichi apples have very short availability with their season from September to December. In addition, few farms grow this apple and the best chance of eating one is going directly to the farms.

9. Cosmic Crisp

Source here

Cosmic Crisp has been labelled apple of the future back in 2016. The apple is promising in terms of sweetness and juiciness, but might be too crisp. Definitely worth a try, given the name and label. Similar to the honey crisp in sweetness, but more on the crisp and juiciness side. However in 2020 the cosmic crisp was not even in the top 8 in terms of sales.

10. Snapdragon

Snapdragon has one of the coolest names for an apple, and the overall eating experience is even better! This apple could be arguably better than the Gala apple in terms of overall bite. The crisp is perfect, and really does snap. The sweetness and juiciness is the same as a Gala. The only thing is that the availability is limited on seasonality. But the eating experience is absolutely phenomenal. Compared to all the apples on this none come close to the snapdragon in terms of the bite. The crisp and juiciness levels and the best I have had in an apple. Nothing but praise for this apple, an absolute must try, truly the Dragon of apples!

Hope you enjoy the list, and if you have any questions drop a comment! Thanks for reading.
