Ambrosia apple is an apple cultivar, which means it was selected for its characteristics. In other words farmers find favorable traits that apple possesses then select those traits for growing. In the case of Ambrosia those traits were discovered by chance. It is said to be a cross between Jonagold and Golden Delicious.
Ambrosia apples are an oval shaped green/red apple with more red as it ripens. The bite profile consists of high crisp, low tartness, medium/low sweetness and medium juiciness. Overall, not too sweet and great for those non sugar people!
Ambrosia apple was discovered from a chance seedling by the Mennell family of Similkameen Valley, British Columbia in their Orchard of Jonagold apples.
Ambrosia apples were ranked top 2nd for total apple sales in the US back in 2016, but have fell out of the top 10 in 2019. The apple is most popular in the Midwest United States, as it ranks 2nd for sales in the Midwest in 2020.
